Surface Nanostructure Of Visible Light Interactive Silicon

by Gerald Huth on November 18, 2002

A diagram illustrating the amazing similarity of the surface nanostructure of visible light interactive silicon (“porous silicon”) and the receptors of the retina of the eye.

The diagram is here.

Note that light absorption and emission have been demonstrated for the silicon structure (antennas are capable both of absorbing and emitting radiation). This same capability I propose may be a function of the retina of the eye.
