Again On Macular Degeneration

September 28th, 2005  |  No Comments »

One hears again that “the gene for (or, “that is associated with”? or,”that causes”?) the condition of macular degeneration has been discovered”. This is yet another all-encompassing genetic explanation for a biological condition without any correlative physical explanation! It is my premise that the MDG condition should be thought of as having two separate stages, namely, a.) the primal cause that I believe to be the individual’s genetic disposition defining the (precise!) short wavelength limit of visual perception, and, b,) whatever subsequent biological capability that might be brought to bear to repair damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reaches and damages the retina.
